Pi (π) and Approximation

Aryabhata [476 AD] worked on the approximation for Pi (π), and proved π is irrational.

He calculated π= ~ 62832/20000 = 3.1416, correct to five digits. The word āsanna (approaching), has been used, clearly suggesting that he not only knew that is this an approximation, but also the value is irrational).
It is to be noted that irrationality of pi was proved in Europe only in 1761 by Lambert.
